Description
Eoris Essence is a roleplaying game inspired by epic video games like Final Fantasy. The art in Eoris takes center stage, with more than 500 illustrations in the core books. The game uses the Essence System, which is based on a simple dice pool mechanic. The size of the dice pool is often the sum of an attribute and a skill. The target numbers varies, and critical successes and tragedies are determined by an additional die called the Essence Die. Emotions are incorporated into the game using psychological traits, which can generate Stress, and a grid that tracks a character's emotional state. Another grid tracks a character's appearance. Reality altering effects are possible through saeia, an extremely advanced form of science that resembles magic. The world has an elaborate backstory.Notes on This Edition
This is the original version, released as a pair of 200+ page hardcover books in a cardboard slipcase. Preorders were accepted in 2008, but the game did not appear until Gen Con 2010. Due to the delays and worries about whether Eoris would turn out to be vaporware, it was dubbed the "Duke Nukem Forever" of RPGs. From the publisher's website:
A box set including two hardcover books with over 500 illustrations featuring the story of a universe where the notions of reality and essence are redefined by the Black Howling, the time in which the dream of the universal consciousness may finally end. It includes everything needed to play: setting, game system, character sheets, etc. There is no need for additional books or player manuals (dice not included).
