Great popular auction catalog of the famous Jay Roe Collection 2003. 150 pages of colored and detailed reference on California fractional gold varieties. Prices realized included. Hardly used or opened by the looks of it. One internet dealer has a copy of this listed for 0. Ours is priced much less. - California fractional gold was born out of the need for small change during the California Gold Rush Period. The US Government and private coiners at that time could do nothing to accommodate this need. Manufacturing jewelers stepped in to fill this important commerce void through the minting of these small gold gems. Coinage shortages continued well into 1856 even when the San Francisco Mint began production to assist. A few years later the production of fractional gold coins ceased, most likely due to official requests from the Gov't. Very few of these beautiful and historic gold coins remain today compared with most other numismatic denominations. California and Territorial gold coins remain one of the most undervalued series. Prices continue to rise as more and more collectors and investors discover the low mintages remaining and the difficultly in find them on the open market. Today, most dealers are lucky to have even 1-2 pieces on hand at any time.
