From 1852 onward, the lack of small gold coins during the California gold rush led private mints to strike quarter, half and dollar gold coins from locally occurring gold supplies. Due to their size and ease of handling, their use was limited and these became more commonly used as souvenirs. The coinage act of April 22, 1864 made private minting of these coins illegal. Complying with the coinage act, non-denominated coins and tokens were produced between 1872-1883. The early issues have Liberty Heads and latter issues have the Indian Heads.
