Description
Offered is an authentic 1853 BG-518 Octagonal Liberty Head California Fractional One Dollar coin in excellent condition. The makers mark on the reverse is "Deri". Deri is short for M. Deriberpie, an engraver who apparently cut dies for Nouzillet & Routhier.
The coin was inspected and deemed authentic by "A Coin Exchange" in Tarzana, CA. It was also described as extremely fine, but in circulated condition. These coins are .900 gold. See last photo where it was tested just shy of 24K.
The bail was added after the coin was struck in 1853. It was actually attached to a vintage pocket watch chain from the 1880's. Back in the day, it was the style to add a bail to these coins and thus used as very fine jewelry. As you can tell from the photos the bail was very professionally done as to not deface the obverse and reverse of the coin.
For those collectors you can retain it as is, or have a professional remove the bail from the coin rim. Weight including the bail is 1.1 grams. I believe these coins weigh 0.9 grams.
NOTE: The BG-518 is deemed as #5 in rarity. At one Heritage auction a BG-518 in MS61 condition sold for ,888 in November 2006.
